„Don Pasquale” in New York - Italian opera with a cinematic twist

Gaetano Donizetti’s Don Pasquale is a masterfully crafted comic opera that, in our Bydgoszcz production - directed by Paweł Szkotak - gains a new sense of freshness and cinematic lightness. Join us for a meeting with Don Pasquale - reimagined as an Italian mafioso in 1940s and 1950s New York. Performances will take place on October 10, 11, and 12.

Historia starego kawalera, który uparcie postanawia się ożenić, by udaremnić plany swojego bratanka, pełna jest humoru, zwrotów akcji i sytuacyjnych gagów. Donizetti bawi się konwencją buffo, a zarazem pozostaje wierny melodyjności, która sprawia, że arie i ansamble z tej opery od prawie dwóch stuleci nie schodzą z afiszy teatrów całego świata.

Inscenizacja Pawła Szkotaka łączy lekkość teatralnej farsy z filmowym rozmachem - zmieniająca się scenografia, wartkie tempo i kostiumy potęgują efekt uczestniczenia w barwnej komedii, gdzie każda postać ma swój wyrazisty rys, zwłaszcza że... nie brak kinowych tropów z „Ojca chrzestnego”, „Gildy”, „Casablanki” czy filmowej adaptacji „Nocy i dni”. 

Nie przez przypadek akcja „Don Pasquale” na scenie Opery Nova została przeniesiona do Nowego Jorku z przełomu lat 40. i 50. XX wieku, a tytułowy bohater ma wiele cech wspólnych z kultową w amerykańskiej kinematografii postacią włoskiego mafiosa.

- „Don Pasquale” opowiada o miłości i władzy. Główną osią konfliktu jest ciągłe starcie tego co męskie z tym co żeńskie. Gdyby nadać tej operze inny tytuł, mógłby on brzmieć „Upadek patriarchy”. W naszej kulturze popularną ikoną męskiej władzy stała się postać mafiosa Don Corleone, wykreowanego najpierw na kartach powieści Maria Puzo, a później zagranego przez Marlona Brando w filmowym „Ojcu chrzestnym”. My do tej postaci trochę odwołujemy się, a trochę się nią bawimy - wyjaśniał reżyserujący spektakl Paweł Szkotak.

To spektakl, w którym w parze idą śmiech, wdzięk, muzyczna finezja, ale też wzruszenie. 
- „Don Pasquale” Donizettiego to jedna z tych oper, która jest wystawiana na scenach całego świata i różnie interpretowana. Starałem się pokazać w „Don Pasquale” nie tylko humor, którego jest oczywiście bardzo wiele - i myślę, że widz niejednokrotnie się uśmiechnie, oglądając perypetie głównych bohaterów - ale znalazłem tam też spory ładunek wzruszenia, co wydaje mi się bardzo interesujące w tej operze - przyznał Paweł Szkotak.

Przyjdźcie, a przekonacie się Państwo, że opera komiczna wciąż potrafi być zaskakująco współczesna!

The story of an old bachelor determined to marry in order to thwart his nephew’s plans is filled with humor, unexpected plot twists, and situational comedy. Donizetti plays masterfully with the buffo convention, while remaining true to the melodic brilliance that has kept the arias and ensembles of this opera on stages around the world for nearly two centuries.

Paweł Szkotak’s production combines the lightness of theatrical farce with the scale of classic cinema -dynamic sets, brisk pacing, and period costumes enhance the feeling of being part of a vibrant comedy, where each character is distinctly drawn. And cinephiles will surely spot certain nods to The Godfather, Gilda, Casablanca, or even the Polish film adaptation of Nights and Days.

It is no coincidence that the action of Don Pasquale at Opera Nova has been moved to New York in the late 1940s and early 1950s, with the title character sharing many traits with the iconic figure of the Italian mobster from American cinema.

“Don Pasquale is about love and power. At its core lies a constant clash between the masculine and the feminine. If I were to give it another title, it might be The Fall of the Patriarch. In our culture, the symbol of male authority has become the figure of Don Corleone - first brought to life in Mario Puzo’s novel, then immortalized by Marlon Brando in The Godfather. We reference that character, but we also play with it,” explains director Paweł Szkotak.

This is a performance where laughter, charm, and musical finesse go hand in hand with genuine emotion.

“Don Pasquale is one of those operas performed on stages around the world, interpreted in countless ways. I wanted to show not only its humor - of which there is, of course, plenty, and I believe the audience will smile more than once - but also the emotion that lies beneath. That combination is what makes this opera so fascinating,” adds Szkotak.
