about
A poetic tale of love stronger than death, immersed in the unique sound of the Kashubian language - rarely present in classical music, and here treated as a fully fledged, extraordinary sonic material. Wòlô bòskô - a song cycle by Łukasz Godyla for baritone and piano - is a work rooted in tradition, yet one that boldly leads it toward the contemporary.

During the 32nd Bydgoszcz Opera Festival, we will host artists of the Teatr Wielki – Opera Narodowa with a remarkable staged interpretation of the Kashubian song cycle Wòlô bòskô, composed by Łukasz Godyla.
Based on traditional melodies and texts selected by Kashubian-born singer Damian Wilma, the work unfolds a moving story of Hanuszka and Jaśek - two lovers separated by fate, social constraints, and the “will of God.” In the staging by Jarosław Kilian, the narrative acquires a metaphysical dimension: memory becomes a mystery rite, and love - an eternal myth.
This is a rare example of a contemporary work rooted in folklore and the Kashubian language, combining the tradition of the Romantic song cycle with a modern stage idiom.
The leading roles are performed by native Kashubians: the outstanding theatre and film actress Danuta Stenka and the aforementioned Damian Wilma, a soloist of Opera Nova.
This exceptional project of the Teatr Wielki – Opera Narodowa will be one of the most intriguing events of the 32nd Bydgoszcz Opera Festival.

Final preparations are underway at Opera Nova for the premiere of Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti, which will inaugurate the Bydgoszcz Opera Festival. Director, set and costume designer THADDEUS STRASSBERGER speaks about his interpretation of one of the most famous bel canto works, his collaboration with the Bydgoszcz company, and the contemporary relevance of Lucia’s story.
